The kidneys is one of the most important organs in the human body. It performs very important functions in the human body, so we should take good care of them.
We’re all aware that there are some bad habits that can damage your kidneys, so in this article, we’re going to focus on them.
Our kidneys filter about 120-150 quarts of blood, to produce 1-2 quarts of urine, filtering waste and extra fluid out of the body.
The vital functions our kidneys perform are: prevent the buildup of waste in the body, keep electrolyte levels stable, and make hormones that regulate blood pressure, make blood cells, and maintain strong bones.
Here are 8 of the bad habits that can damage the kidneys and we do them every day!
1. NOT EMPTYING YOUR BLADDER
Retaining urine in your bladder is a bad idea, because when nature calls, you should listen. If we do it on regular basis, it can increase the urine pressure in your kidneys and lead to renal failure or incontinence.
2. NOT DRINKING ENOUGH WATER
We all need to enable a proper hydration to our kidneys so that they can perform their functions. If you don’t drink enough fluids, the toxins can start accumulating in the blood, as there isn’t enough fluid to drain them through the kidneys and you can easily damage your kidneys. The National Kidney Foundation claims that we should all drink at least 12 glasses of water per day. The color of our urine is the best way to see if we’re drinking enough fluids.
3. HIGH SALT CONSUMPTION
Salt is important for the body, but doctors claim that we should limit our intake. Over consumption can raise your blood pressure and put too much strain on the kidneys. We shouldn’t eat more than 5.8 grams of salt daily.
4. REGULAR USE OF ANALGESICS
We use medications way too often and too fast, in too big doses and not in the right way. When pain occurs, we all just swallow the pill. Unfortunately, all pharmaceutical drugs come with side effects, and many cause damage to the kidneys. Still, there are some medications that we have to take.
5. HIGH PROTEIN DIET
Protein is good for your health. But, excessive consumption of red meat and other protein-based foods can increase the risk of developing kidney disease. A recent study that was conducted by a group of experts at the Harvard University has discovered that too much protein in your diet can harm the kidneys. The byproduct of protein digestion is ammonia, a toxin your hard-working kidneys need to neutralize. More protein means more effort for the kidneys and in time, that can damage your kidneys.
6. TOO MUCH ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION
The toxins found in alcohol damage the liver, but also your kidneys. Kidney Health Australia and American Kidney Fund claim that one way to avoid kidney disease is to drink alcohol in moderation.
7. CONSUMING TOO MUCH CAFFEINE
Caffeine is often too much consumed, mostly because of the stressful way of life nowadays. It features in many soft drinks and sodas and in very short time, your blood pressure goes through the roof and your kidneys start complaining.
8. IGNORING COMMON INFECTIONS
You can also damage your kidneys by ignoring common infections like colds, the flu, coughs, pharyngitis, tonsillitis and others. People who have kidney disease often have a history of not resting when they are sick. People with kidney disease are often more sensitive to weather changes and get sick way too often.
